Sink Water Testing

Temperature: 21.8 c

ORP: 508.8 mV

Color of Water: Smoky/Milky White

Volume: 200 mL

pH: ~6.0

Conductivity: 277.6 µS/cm

Temperature: 22.5 c

ORP: 148. 3mV

Color of Water: Clear

Volume: 100 mL

pH: 8

Conductivty: 279.5 µS/cm

Qualitative Observations: The water sits at the top of the filter, slowly flowing through the filtration device. Since the filter is see through, it is easy to follow the water flow as it dampens the sediments within it. The water trickles out slowly, but it comes out clear.

Buffalo Bayou Water Testing

Temperature: 21.5 c

ORP: 136.8 mV

Color of Water: Yellow, cloudy

Volume: 200 mL

pH: 7

Conductivity: 181.9 µS/cm

Temperature: 23 c

ORP: 177.2 mV

Color of Water: Clear

Volume: 175 mL

pH: 7

Conductivity: 189.8  ÂµS/cm

Qualitative Observations: The water remains sitting at the top and is slow to move throughout the filter. This msy be because the filter has sat drying all weekend after not being in use and requires some times to become moist again. The product had to be left alone overnight, but the next day it still produced clean and clear water.

Time: N/A

In conclusion of the Buffalo Bayou water filtration system testing, our group was able to find all of the correct measurements except for the time it took to filter through. It is believed this is because the filter had sat without any water flowing threw it over the weekend. Because of this, water had trouble flowing through the very dry materials. Fortunately, overnight a large portion of the water managed to flow through.

There is a dramatic difference between the initial water and filtered water. Not only the color of the liquid changed but its contents have altered as well. A higher ORP ensures good oxidation levels, a stable pH shows a safe acidity, and the conductivity has not dramatically risen.

Bacteria

Our group tested one mL of our filtered Buffalo Bayou water for bacteria. One the above left is the control sample with no grown bacteria. On the right is our sample, which faired pretty well with only a few small growths on the sheet.

However, in order to generate purified water after filtering the water through the filtration device, it must be boiled. This ensures bacteria will be killed by the extreme heat temperatures and put those drinking it at less of a risk for water borne illnesses such as cholera or e.coli.
